Only one vintage is made each year from a blend of the traditional Portuguese varietals Touriga Nacional, Tinta Barroca and Souzão. The wine is matured in old 500 litre French oak barrels after hand sorting and foot crushing in lagares for maximum extraction of both flavours and colour. This method closely resembles traditional Portuguese port wine making techniques which have been in use for centuries.

The is a vibrant plum colour, with dense aromas of prune, spice and tobacco. A fleshy, mouthful of flavours, showing smoothness, concentrated red fruit nuances, and a firm structure ensuring considerable longevity.

Pride and prestige from one of SA’s best wine cellars.

The nose is ladened with tomato confit and ripe cherries. Swathes of tobacco linger alongside cassis and eucalyptus. Rich, brooding and generous. Spiced plums and baskets of violets too make an appearance.

In the mouth a lively yet flavourful velvet glove is born. Earthy spice plays alongside wood tannin and fruit.

On the fore chocolate, tobacco and dark berry fruit roll over the senses. A salty tone is juxtaposed by tomato and cloves. Subtle mint too is enhanced by dark Swiss chocolate on the aftertaste.

The cassis and plums flavours and become one and offers refinement and elegance.

SaleWine R285

One of the finest Reds SA has at present.

Grapes from the finest vineyards on the slopes of the Simonsberg and Helderberg mountains provided the base for this wine, this Bordeaux blend of 32% Cabernet Franc, 27% Merlot, 23% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Petit Verdot and 4% Malbec was matured in French oak barrels for 18 months, extracting the finest oak aromas to compliment the layers and layers of delicious mixed red and black berry flavours.

Marrying traditional winemaking methods, science, art and the use of modern technology, this wine was gently handled and matured in the finest French oak barrels for eighteen months. To the sounds of Mozart, all the elements of this wine were blended, bottled and left to rest and mature for 12 months.

Platter said - 5 star Leafy fragrance & hint of cedar a lovely intro to unusually dry & restrained 5-way Bordeaux red 2010, Light-stepping, balanced elegance belies powerful alcohol, but flavour length reveals subtle fruit intensity, untramelled by oak.

Tim Atkin, Master of Wine, gave the wine 93 points and
rated this wine as a very elegant Bordeaux blend with all
five varieties contributing to the poise and intensity of
the wine. "Seductively oaked with a refreshing finish".

Thelema Cabernet 2010

A regular Platter 4 1/2 star wine

Rated 4 1/2 stars by Christian Eedes Caberent Report

The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon was aged for 18 months in 45% new oak and has a very succinct nose of ripe red berries, wild hedgerow and a touch of cedar all with very fine definition. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, supple tannins. It has good acidity and a lovely caressing, ironically Saint Emilion-like finish. This is a superb Cabernet Sauvignon drinking beautifully now

Waterford Caberent 2011

Rated 5 stars by Christian Eedes Cabernet Report

Intense aroma of Cedar wood, cigarbox and cassis, the palate is tighly structured with a classic dry Cabernet Sauvignon finish. The 2011 vintage shows a lightness in extract with a fresh midpalate, a vintage that will age gracefully, yet can be appreciated in youth.

KCB Envy

Platter 4 star - a bold wooded wine

The KCB Envy is a complex and multi layered wine, combining rich maturity with a fresh twist, delivering elegance with intensity.
The colour is reminiscent of sun ripened wheat with a pale, almost translucent rim. Baked custard apple, quince jelly and lingering spice entice the nose to explore further. Stewed fruit compote on the palate, together with integrated oak, defining acidity and long waxy finish characterises this wine which is a collaboration of the old and the new. KCB Envy was made with minimal interference and as such, harmless crystals may precipitate in the bottle over time.

The wine is a blend of three distinctive components, starting with the 2006 vintage which was uncorked and blended with a fresh 2013 Chenin from a very site specific block located in the Piekenierskloof region of the Cape West Coast. The final part of this trilogy was a small portion of concentrated 2013 noble late harvest wine. Both portions of the 2013 wines were tank fermented and left on its primary lees for 6 months, gaining complexity and richness on the lees. The wine was lightly fined and filtered before bottling took place.

Mulderbosch Single Vineyard Chenin

The raison d’être for this project is to showcase SA Chenin Blanc in all its splendour, demonstrate the Cape’s diversity of terroir and Mulderbosch’s prowess in making beautifully crafted, individualistic, terroir driven expressions of Chenin Blanc.

Block A 2013 -

In order to showcase each single vineyard as authentically as possible, we have maintained the same winemaking practice for each. On arrival the grapes were destemmed, crushed and immediately pressed. Using the free-run fraction only, the juice was settled and transferred to neutral barriques for fermentation which started spontaneously and was completed using a selected strain. After a ten month maturation in French Oak barrel on lees, the wines were racked and lightly filtered in preparation for bottling.

MATURATION: 10 years from the date of vintage

The prevalence of a sandy fraction in this vineyard’s soil and its close proximity to the influence of False Bay lends a certain lightness, a freshness to Block A’s wine. Piercing in its purity, Block A’s beautiful fruit quality radiates pineapple, mango and citrus flavours. The palate is marked, though by no means dominated, by a crisp, intense acidity which provides a superb thread of mineral length to the core of the wine.

Block S2 2013-

Characterised by soils derived from the ancient Malmesbury Shales, Block S2’s vineyard produces an alluring Chenin blanc laced with exotic perfume and subtle spice. Flavours of dried apricots, cinnamon bark, and fresh vanilla pod juxtapose this wine’s crystalline purity, whilst one’s senses revel in this powerful expression of time and place.

Block W 2013 -

The ripest of the three wines, Block W’s granite derived soils and wind exposed position overlooking False Bay have resulted in a powerful wine, all muscle and structure. The angular, bold texture of this wine is enhanced by flavours of panacotta, custard powder and hints of wild flower aromatics.

Dry Spanish Sherry

Valdespino  is  one  of  the  oldest  and  very  few  family-owned bodegas  in Jerez, with a history of Sherry production going back  six centuries. Alfonso Valdespino was one of 24  knights who  fought  for the city of Jerez with King Alfonso X, against the Arabs  in 1264. As a reward  for  his  efforts  he  was  given  land  in  the  Jerez  region.  Today Valdespino  belongs  to  the  Estevez  family,  and  they  own  750 hectares of  their own  vineyards  in  Jerez, which  is  rare  in  this  region, and  allows  them  close  control  over  grape  quality.

1 x 750ml bottle per set thus 3 bottles

Valdespino Amontillado - The  nose  shows  notes  of  both  the biological  and  oxidative  ageing,  yeast,  bread,  but  also  dried  fruits and  a  hint  of  toffee,  caramel  and  leather.  Very dry,  very complex, with a generous body and well balanced acidity. Sugar 2g and made from Palomino.

Valdespino  Deliciosa - Deliciosa is matured in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, a town on the Atlantic coast, within the " Golden Triangle" in the area of Jerez-Xeres-Sherry production. Here, the gentle sea breezes help to give this wine a very dry, light, crisp and slightly salty flavour. Fresh and pungent to the nose.

Valdespino Inocenta Fino - Yellow straw-coloured, medium low intensity. Pungent, delicate and complex, with clear almonds notes and autolysis.

Soft entry, tasty round (greasy), with structure, volume and character but as well fresh and saline. Long wine and persistent. Sugar 1g and made from Palamino

The Foundry Grenache Blanc 2013

THe 2012 was 5 star rated and this is not far behind - well worth the try.

These grapes are sourced from our neighbour’s vineyard at The Foundry’s home farm in Voor Paardeberg and managed by Chris Williams. Grown on Malmesbury shale and decomposed granite,
these trellised vines allow us to precisely manage the canopy to enhance fruit complexity and balance.
A small crop was ripened and harvested at modest sugar levels but at full flavour ripeness to ensure lower alcohol but brighter acidity and freshness.
Hand harvested and cooled overnight, this was whole-bunch pressed to restrain phenolics, yet fermented with a high percentage of solids to give breadth and definition to the palate in seasoned tight
grain hogsheads. Partial un-innoculated fermentation gives the palate a savoury dimension but the fruit is still vividly expressed. Barrel aged for five months before bottling.

Tasting Notes:
The Foundry Grenache Blanc 2013 has lifted floral aromas with hints of lemon cream and white stone fruit. The palate is rich but restrained with focused, pure fruit, minerally mid palate and has a long finish with a citrus tang.

Colmant Brut Reserve

Pinot Noir 52%, Chardonnay 48% (Franschhoek, Robertson, Elgin, Somerset-West and Stellenbosch). 10% of the blend is made of reserve wine from the previous vintage and 12% of the base wine is barrel fermented.

A subtle pale gold colour with a very clean and elegant nose. The aroma has a gentle spicy toastiness with a lemon / yeasty perfume followed by more mature fruit. Plenty of freshness on the palate, with a good acidity which perfectly balances the yeasty depth, bready flavours and ample structure. Long smooth finish. Will develop nicely over the years.

Paul Wallace Black Dog Malbec 2009

Platter 4 star

This powerful example is bursting with flavour. Think dark chocolate, mint and musk intertwined with menthol. There are caramel toffee notes and a leafy undertone - and that’s just on the nose!

Rich ripe fruit invade this generous soft pallet. Even with the mint and menthol bursting through, there remains a natural balance between acid and fruit.

Just when you thought it was enough flavour, a second flurry of mace, cherry, ginger and cloves makes its appearance.

Breathe this one in and enjoy it slowly.

This sumptuous red will age for at least a good 4 - 6 years but the flavours will change and become subtle. As with most hand-crafted wines, there will be light sediment at the end of the bottle.

This Maiden Release of the Elgin Vintners Sauvignon Blanc Semillon bursts with intense aromas of guava, jasmine, pickled pear and spicy white peach. The palate completely delivers on expectation and combines both a femininity and core of minerality. An intriguing wine, a powerhouse of fresh summer stone fruits, full on the palate with a silky finish. Whilst this wine drinks extremely well now it is expected to develop even greater complexity with further maturation.
